Shapewear : The Foundation to A Sleek & Polished Look

3:24 PM

At the request of a few of my fellow curvy lovelies, let’s talk shapewear!!! Shapewear, also known as foundation garments, are worn by women across all cultures and sizes to create a more smooth and polished foundation while wearing some of our most fashionable and trendy pieces. I must reiterate shapewear and foundation pieces will not alter your body’s appearance, but function to temporarily provide a sleek & clean foundation to which our fashion garment lie. Gone are the days that we have to endure the painful and unconformable stuffed feelings our 17th & 18th century curvy comrades faced.

I first want to dispel a few common misconception of shapewear –

*Shapewear is made for ALL women of shapes, sizes, and proportions! They are not just worn by curvy or size-friendly women! Shapewear is worn by many Hollywood stars, thin or curvy!
*Shapewear does not have to be uncomfortable. A proper understanding of your body, and knowing the areas you wish to create a more smooth look, you can select your size for a comfortable fit.

Because of the many different types of pieces offered today, your search for the perfect garment can become overwhelming. I’ve listed some pieces that I wear below and how they function to create the look you’re going for!

Light Support

Bodysuits/Unitards – Usually are long-sleeved items that have a snap crotch. Most of these items contain some elasticity. These pieces are often sold in regular stores and offered as fashion pieces as well.

Girdles - A garment usually worn similar to underwear that may stop at the top of the thigh area or extend to the mid-thigh area. They have panels that generally hold/smooth the stomach area lift the bottom, and make the tops of the thighs smoother. Girdles fit slightly above the waist to minimize the waist line. Body

Medium/Heavy Support

Briefers/All-In-Ones – These garments are similar to the body suit without sleeves. Some of them feature a cup bra, however more modern body briefers fall below the bust line allowing women to wear a separate bra. Some body shapers feature a snap crotch, stretch or Lycra panels pulling in the bottom, stomach, and waist slightly. Body briefers may feature a boy short leg or a typical full underwear leg.

Control Underwear – Very similar to the girdle, however they stop at the top of the leg instead of covering the leg.

With much research and a more in-depth understanding of the female physique, shapewear designers are seeking ways to provide a more comfortable and wearable experience for women looking for a smooth look.

Now, there are some ladies that are looking for the 17th & 18th century waistline and for those brave women, I have the answer! While on vacation, I stopped by Fashion to Figure (link) in Maryland, and a fellow curvy lovely introduced me to a corset garment by Squeem. I purchased the Miracle Vest. Admittedly so, it does take some getting used to, however, once you’ve worn it a while, it will become more comfortable. This particular brand is offered in-store at Fashion to Figure. However, can be purchased quite easily at an on-line retailer. Please visit the site and enter your location and it will lead you in the right direction! If you’re ordering online, please ensure you pay close attention to the measurements/sizes to ensure a proper fit.
